Facebook Community Chats Shut Down - What's The Best Alternative?

Facebook shut down the Community Chats on August 29, 2025. All existing chats were removed with no export or fallback options - and new ones cannot be created. If your group relied on chats for a quick QnA or daily conversations, that part of the community is gone forever.

So - what do you do now?

It depends on the kind of community you run. The casual groups can move to WhatsApp or Discord. Serious communities should move to a platform they own. So here's how I'm thinking about each option right now.

What happened to Facebook Community Chats

The Community Chats were one of the only real-time tools inside FB Groups. They were used to drop quick updates, small questions and even solve problems quickly. Facebook just removed it - as if it didn't matter.

I've spoken to several group owners in the last few days. Some were frequent users of chat, but many didn't care. Facebook probably had enough data to conclude that Chats didn't matter.

...and that's why you should have 100% ownership of your own community. You don't own a Facebook Group. Facebook can remove the group or ban it overnight and there's nothing you can do.

Your Options Now

  1. Messenger Group Chats: This is the easiest one. Start a messenger chat with your active members. It's separate from your group. You'll have to invite participants.

  2. WhatsApp: Fast to setup, everyone has it. Many members have privacy concerns about sharing their phone number with strangers. So consider that before you go for setting up a WhatsApp Group.

  3. Discord: Works really well for casual and small communities. Several group admins I know moved there. It gets harder to manage as community grows and the content is not indexed in Google or LLMs.

Are Facebook Groups Going Away?

No. Facebook isn't killing Groups. Actually, it's doubling down on them - but for its own benefit.

Meta recently expanded Forum - a standalone app for Facebook Groups. Its Ask feature uses AI to pull answers from group posts, even from the public groups you haven't joined. Facebook search even got an AI mode recently.

Well, that's what it is. Your members write the answers and it becomes a fuel for Facebook's AI. The value however stays inside the Meta ecosystem. Your community (and your business, if any) does not get any value from it.

    Hey Richard - I get the frustration. Community Chats were shut down on August 29, 2025. It's just another example of how little these platforms care for their users. I've spoken with many FB Group owners. Some of them used the chats frequently; but many didn't. I think FB must have had lot of data to decide that Chat's isn't worth continuing.

    Right now, there are few options. Either move your group to WhatsApp (but most people will have privacy concerns). Or simply rely on FB messenger to initiate chats.

    Alternatively, you can migrate your FB Group to Jatra. We are already working on real-time chat feature (with SEO benefits) for our customers. It should be ready within weeks.

    My friends have migrated their communities from Facebook Groups to Discord, but those are all small and casual ones. I’m trying to convince the more serious groups to consider moving to Jatra :-)

    I just don’t get why people still host serious communities on Facebook. Community Chats disappeared as if they never existed, and it makes me wonder if Facebook Groups could be shut down just as easily. You really can’t trust these big social media companies.

    Update: I've talked to a lot of community owners ever since Facebook announced closure of Community Chats. No one expected this move. The serious ones are now rethinking Facebook Groups.

    Community Chats were not 'paused'. They were shut down and existing chats are being removed. No export, no fallback.

    If that doesn't tell you anything about community ownership, I don't know what will. Facebook optimizes for its own roadmap - not how communities actually function day to day.

    There are two main transitions I'm seeing:

    1. The casual groups are picking up WhatsApp or Discord.
    2. The serious ones are moving to owned platforms; where chat is just one layer for real-time interaction.

    Making content searchable has become a priority - because AI and LLMs can't crawl your content on FB.

    I'd love to welcome opinions from fellow community builders. Especially - if you're unhappy with FB's recent actions.

    Revisiting this thread after a while. Since last update, there have been new developments.

    First - Facebook is NOT killing Groups. It's doubling down on them but for its own benefit 🙂.

    Last week, Meta explanded Forum - a standalone app for Facebook Groups. Its 'Ask' feature uses AI to pull answers from group posts, even from public groups you haven't joined.

    In June, Facebook search got an AI mode that does the same.

    Now think about it. your members answers are the fuel for Meta's AI. That value stays inside the Meta ecosystem. There's no direct benefit to the community owners.

    Just a reminder: If you are building a community, build it on a platform you own!
