My team and I are exploring options for launching a dedicated online community for a skincare brand in the UK. I have looked at platforms like Circle, Discourse, Slack and Jatra. The pricing is all over the place.

What brought me to Jatra is the article: Self-hosted Vs Fully Managed Community Platforms. The article makes several good points in favor of the fully-managed platforms. I have a few questions:

    • What is the typical cost of good community platform?

    • What are various pricing models I should consider?

    • Are free / open-source platforms like Flarum worth considering?

    • Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of?

Thank you for your patience. I look forward to hearing from you.

TL;DR: Most online community platforms cost between $39 to $249 per month, depending on features, branding, and user count. Free options like Flarum and Discourse exist if you're okay with self-hosting.

Community platforms pricing is determined by several factors. User limit, bandwidth, features, content-types and brand contribute to the overall pricing. The fully managed community platforms do the heavy-lifting behind the scenes and therefore require recurring pricing.

For example, Jatra takes care of data security, backups, bugfixing, feature development, customer support and community consultancy; and therefore is a premium community platform.

Open source platforms are a good option if you are comfortable doing all of it yourself.
