• I recently started as a community manager at a game development company. In a casual chat with a colleague, we touched on an interesting question: What is a community, really?

A lot of people believe that having a big social media following equals having a community. But I’m not sure if that’s the best way to define it. Does simply having followers who like or comment on your content make it a community? Or is there something deeper that creates a sense of real connection and belonging?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you define a true community, especially in the digital world? What do you think are the key elements that make it more than just a group of followers?

Hi Angela! Great question—and a crucial one for anyone in community management.

Here’s how I’d define a community: A community is a group of people who connect around a shared purpose, building relationships through ongoing interaction, support, and shared experiences.

It’s not just about numbers or followers; it’s about creating a place where members feel they belong, where they’re valued, and where they contribute to something meaningful.

In a real community, people engage not only with the brand or content but with each other. There’s a sense of connection that goes beyond individual interests—it’s a mutual investment in a common goal or passion that brings everyone together.

For your gaming community, what kind of purpose or values do you want to unite people around? What sort of environment would help members feel part of something meaningful every time they log in?

Are you sure? This action cannot be undone.
