• I recently started as a community manager at a game development company. In a casual chat with a colleague, we touched on an interesting question: What is a community, really?

A lot of people believe that having a big social media following equals having a community. But I’m not sure if that’s the best way to define it. Does simply having followers who like or comment on your content make it a community? Or is there something deeper that creates a sense of real connection and belonging?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you define a true community, especially in the digital world? What do you think are the key elements that make it more than just a group of followers?

Hi Angela! Great question—and a crucial one for anyone in community management.

Here’s how I’d define a community: A community is a group of people who connect around a shared purpose, building relationships through ongoing interaction, support, and shared experiences.

It’s not just about numbers or followers; it’s about creating a place where members feel they belong, where they’re valued, and where they contribute to something meaningful.

In a real community, people engage not only with the brand or content but with each other. There’s a sense of connection that goes beyond individual interests—it’s a mutual investment in a common goal or passion that brings everyone together.

For your gaming community, what kind of purpose or values do you want to unite people around? What sort of environment would help members feel part of something meaningful every time they log in?

Social media following is not your community. A community is group of people who share common interest, values or goals.

There are few key elements of a community:

    1. Shared purpose:

A community thrives when its members have a common interest or purpose. This could be as broad as love for photography or bodybuilding. At Jatra, we host communities of people interested in books and also people who are interested in building AI-powered websites.

    1. Engagement and Interaction

A real community fosters engagement - members actively participate in the community, share ideas, help each other and collaborate. It's active engagement, not just being present.

    1. Sense of belonging and identity

I think people join and stick to a community because they feel a sense of belonging. Without this feeling, a community dies a slow death.

    1. Support and Networking

An engage community has members who support each other in the best possible way. When people interact with each other and form a network - the community thrives.

Of course, running a telegram channel may not be the same as community where the admins post content and users consume.
