I’ve been thinking a lot about community building these days and going into a rabbit hole about what makes a successful community. I’ve asked this question in other forums and have received great responses. But it’s always a good idea to get different perspectives.

Basically: What is the hardest thing about building a community?

I want to learn from real-world examples of the challenges you’ve faced building your community? Also share your thoughts, tips and hacks that worked.

Thank you in advance! Look forward to hearing from all of you.

Maintaining community growth after the initial momentum is the hardest part of building a community. We faced this problem in one of the Slack groups we are building. Our initial members came through personal invites and our extended network.

It's hard to motivate people to bring new people. We have not been able to find an answer to our growth problem.

Convincing users to join the community, especially in the early days of community - is the hardest thing in community building.

Solving member disputes in a large community is always a challenge. People take sides and you're the de-facto judge. They expect you to solve the matter without being partial; and that's the hardest part of community manager's role.
