Welcome to the community, Emma. The best tactic that has worked for me is to respond to the discussions fast. This works always because people do not expect answers to their queries on forums. However, when you respond them faster; it surprises them and creates a feeling of active community.

Interesting discussion. For me, it's the personalized direct message I send to the new community users. As owner, I have access to the registered member's email ID. I use to check the LinkedIn profile of the member. It gives me a lot of information about their background and helps me customize my DM.
It's kinda sneaky; but works like charm. Have not received any complaints so far. Highly recommended.
