I am trying to figure out the normal lurker to active member ratio in a growing community. In our community, about 98% of the users are lurkers; and I’m wondering if that’s normal. Of course, I’d like to have more active users and turn them into actively engaged members.

Emma - typically any growing community will have about 90% luckers. Of course, this ratio is for open communities and the number may vary for highly focused communities.

The ratio varies as the community grows and if you have a big community, 98% luckers is nothing to worry about. In fact, it's a good problem to solve - because it's easy to turn them into members. I'll write a short guide on the techniques we use that works always.
