• Will AI Replace Community Manager Jobs?

I was chatting with a colleague the other day about how AI is creeping into almost every part of our work. No one I know writes email without consulting ChatGPT. None of our marketing content is 100% human written anymore. A question popped-up during our conversation: Will AI replace community managers?

We spoke about how AI can handle spam filtering, approving posts, summarizing discussions and replying to basic queries - better than a human community manager.

But managing a community is not just about these repetitive tasks. It’s about reading between the lines, understanding people and creating a sense of belonging. This is all “human stuff” and I don’t think AI will replace community professionals.

But it’s the question to this community. What do my fellow community managers think?

AI won't replace community managers. It will reshape the role. We talk a lot about this topic and it's evident that artificial intelligence that it's faraway from replacing humans. AI is a tool to make you more efficient; not your replacement.

We already automate several time consuming tasks. For example, automatic moderation, answering repeated questions and generating ideas for content. However, my community moderators and I build a personal connect with our community members.

Ours is a D2C customer community. Our community handles a lot of customer queries. Most of them are from frustrated customers who want to talk to company representatives. We simply cannot make them talk to AI. They want a real human, who can own up the things and solve the problems.

AI and Community Managers are here to co-exist; not replace humans.

No, AI will not replace community managers. AI is a tool to make community managers more effective by automating the repetitive tasks. The future belongs to community managers offloading tasks to AI and freeing up time to build real human connect.

I agree that AI is advancing rapidly and getting smarter. However, it still lacks the context and real-world exposure. AI still lacks the capability to "read between the lines" - an important skill that a community manager uses to build authentic human experiences.

Community management is fundamentally about fostering belonging, reading between the lines and providing empathetic support - areas where human intuition remains irreplaceable. Treat AI as a powerful tool to enhance efficiency that allows community managers to focus on strategic initiatives and deeper community engagement.

As Alex said, the future of community management is in co-existance of AI and humans.

AI will not replace community managers. About a year ago, there was lot of speculation around AI replacing social media managers. But we saw the opposite. AI is now helping social media managers be more effective.

Using AI tools, I've been able to create more creative posts with images and videos and add data and facts.

I believe community management is an emerging field. AI will accelerate pace of community building. Community managers can leverage AI tools to perform better moderation, create new, exciting content in terms of infographics, images, videos, presentations to keep the members engaged.

I can see how AI will allow humans to have more time for creative thinking by saving time on most mundane things.
