When we built the first prototype of Jatra - we were 100% sure that we won't introduce nested replies.

Nested replies aren't new; but they were made popular by social networks. I always felt that they offered a terrible reading experience.

However, the demand kept growing. In almost every demo call, potential customers asked if we supported nested replies.

Finally, we decided to give it a serious thought. How'd we build nested replies if we were 'inventing' them?

Following were the restrictions we wanted to put in place:

  1. Nested replies should feel natural. They should not affect the reading experience.

  2. Creating a nested reply should feel natural. Unlike Reddit - where you sometimes can't find your own reply.

  3. Nested replies should have limits:

    • Top Level Reply : L0

      • Nested Reply Level 1: L1

        • Nested Reply Level 2: L2

  4. We settled with 3 levels of replies - which I believe solves all the problems.

  5. From the database viewpoint, we should not have any delays in rendering sufficiently large thread.

...and we were able to achieve all our objectives. Here's a sneak peek at the upcoming nested replies functionality on Jatra. Coming to your Jatra Powered Community, soon! 🙌
