Jatra 3.1 :: Direct Messaging is Live đź‘‹
Introducing 1:1 Direct Messaging 🙌
You can now send 1:1 direct messages on Jatra. It’s built to feel calm and predictable. No surprise DMs, no noisy inbox, and clear control over who can reach you.
How it works
Request-based first contact
If someone messages you for the first time, it starts as a request.
You can Accept or Ignore. Messaging continues only after acceptance.
Messaging from profiles
Start a conversation from any member’s profile using the Message action.
A dedicated Inbox
Your inbox lives at /inbox with a clean list of conversations.
Unread chats are highlighted, with message previews, relative timestamps, and pagination.
A focused chat experience
Chat opens in a dedicated view with a clean central layout.
The header shows both participants, usernames, role badges, and the conversation status so you always know the context.
Controls and privacy
Smart rules around who can DM
Communities can set simple thresholds for who can message (based on activity and account age). This keeps DMs useful and reduces spam.
Ignore, not block
We use Ignore as a quiet suppression model.
Ignored users don’t get alerts or visible feedback that they were ignored.
Reconnect without losing history
If you ignored someone earlier, the “Allow messages” flow lets you reconnect without wiping the conversation.
Delete is “delete for me”
Deleting a conversation removes it from your inbox only.
If the other person messages again later, the thread can reappear for you, with past messages still intact.
Quality of life details
No accidental follow-ups on pending requests
A pending request allows only the first message. Follow-ups require acceptance.
Fast, responsive messaging
The inbox and chat update automatically, and older messages load in batches so long threads stay smooth.
Read receipts
Per-recipient delivery and read receipts are supported (single and double ticks), with timestamps.
A better composer
Enter-to-send, emoji picker, quick emoji shortcuts, click-outside close, and a loading state to prevent double sending.
Images are off for now
Image upload in DMs is currently disabled by product choice.
Notifications
You’ll get in-app notifications for message and request activity, with direct links to the right chat.
Email notifications for requests and unread messages are supported, with sensible guardrails to avoid unnecessary emails.
