Starting a new community is always exciting. But getting your first 10 members can sometimes feel like the hardest to get.

This discussion is an extension of Kaustubh’s article - How to get first 100 community members, and he does share some great insights.

I want to learn what tips or hacks did you implement in your community to onboard those first members?

    • Did you invite friends or colleagues?

    • Did you post on social media or forums?

    • Did you offer something special to early joiners?

Also, do share how long did you take to go from 0 to 10. Any lessons you learned during that early stage?

I look forward to hearing your stories - no matter how scrappy or creative they are. Bring them on!

I personally invited some of our most enthusiastic customers to our community. No incentive was offered to them to join and participate. I worked with our customer success team, identified the users who were most active on chats, email and offered suggestions for product. Some of them were active on social media, recommending our product to their peers.

I think it's the best thing I did to launch our community.

Incentives may take away the connect users need to feel with the community.

We got our first 10 community members from my personal network. I reached out to my friends and alumni network of our school. 3 of them are now regular visitors and the rest visit once or twice each month.

This is because I email and WhatsApp them with every new update. They get annoyed, but eventually come back to the community and participate.
