• How to write a community mission statement?

How do you write a mission statement for community that attracts the right type of people? Our marketing team is defining the ICP for our community and has tasked me to come up with a mission statement. The goal is to create a mission statement that is clear, inspiring and useful.

I looked around for examples; but the ones I found were too generic. Simply saying “We are here to connect people” does not cut it. I’d appreciate it if you could share a few examples of mission statement for your community.

A community mission statement is a clear, purpose-driven sentence that explains why your community exists and who it is for.

Writing a mission statement is one of the first steps of building a minimum viable community. It’s your community’s “reason to exist” captured in one short sentence. It tells members what the community is about, who it serves, and what kind of transformation or value they’ll get.

    Why it is useful

A good mission statement helps you:

    • Set clear expectations for members
    • Attract people who truly belong
    • Align your team and community leaders
    • Filter out distractions and stay focused on what matters

You can display your mission statement on your member onboarding pages, welcome email or community pitch-decks.

Simple Formula to Write Community Mission Statement

Here’s a handy formula you can use:

“A community for [target audience] to [goal/action] so they can [outcome/transformation].”

You can tweak the format to fit your style, but this structure keeps things focused.

    Examples

    • Women in Climate Tech: A community for women in clean tech to connect, collaborate, and lead meaningful change in the climate space.

    • Figma Designers Hub: A place for Figma users to learn, improve their skills, and build beautiful things—together.

    • Bootstrapped Founders Circle: Helping indie founders share wins, struggles, and real strategies to grow profitable businesses—without raising funding.

    • Parenting with Science: A supportive space for curious parents to explore evidence-based parenting and raise confident kids.

    • Remote Marketers Collective: A global community where remote marketers connect, learn, and grow their craft - together.

Are you sure? This action cannot be undone.
