• Is it okay to rewrite thread titles for better SEO?

n our community, members often post discussions with titles like “Need help!” or “Quick question.” These aren’t very helpful for others browsing or searching later. So I usually rewrite them to be more descriptive and clear. It also helps with SEO and makes the threads easier to find.

But recently, one of the members reached out and asked why I changed their title. They said they preferred their original version.

Is it okay to rewrite thread titles posted by members for better clarity and SEO?

How do others handle this? Do you ask for permission, inform the member, or just go ahead and do it? Curious to know what’s worked in your communities.

Hi Paula, great question! Yes, it's absolutely okay to change titles of threads for clarity and better SEO. We do it all the time in all our communities. Some of the members won't like it; but that's okay. There are several advantages of rewriting titles from vague "help please" to something more sensible and descriptive.

    • It improves the user experience for other members
    • It helps search engines understand the content
    • Your local community search will return better results
    • It shows the seriousness of the community towards creating good content

So, don't worry. Feel free to update the titles for better SEO.

Thank you, Kaustubh. I didn't for a moment think that updated title would offend the member.
