We are evaluating community platforms and forum tools to migrate our Xenforo powered community. The main concern is to move out of XF without losing our traffic. So far, we have explored Circle, Mighty Networks, Bettermode, Flarum and Jatra. We liked your focus on SEO.

Can Jatra promise minimal loss of traffic upon migtration to Jatra? We would love to talk to someone who knows SEO and can guide us through the migration.

Hi @florian , we've discussed this over the call. I'll share the highlights from our call in this thread for future visitors looking to migrate from Xenforo to Jatra.

    How Google Treats URL Changes

When a community migrates from one platform to other, the URLs change. Let's see how XenForo and Jatra handle URL generation:

    • XenForo: /threads/why-are-users-edit-users-permissions-all-no.198788/

    • Jatra: discussion/xenforo-jatra-community-migration-without-losing-traffic

Notice that XenForo adds the 'thread_id' - a unique number generated on the backend to the URLs. Jatra, however chooses clean URLs built from title. In addition; XenForo prepends '/threads/' to the URL slug while Jatra opts for the 'post-type' - '/discussion/'

When a community is migrated, the URLs get affected.

When Google senses domain-level URL updates; it temporarily lowers the ranking. This is expected. Google then takes anywhere between 3-8 weeks to re-crawl the entire community and checks if everything is fine.

So - you are looking at about 3-8 weeks of lower traffic in most of the cases. This time period is not set in stone. If the community is large it may take even longer for Google to crawl the entire community and update the URLs.

However - there's an important condition for Google to recognize the change and restore traffic: Proper redirects.

Setting up 301 - Permanent Redirects

During migration, Jatra will map the old URLs to the new ones and create HTTP 301 Redirects. So, if the user visits /old-url, Jatra will automatically redirect them to the /new-url. At the browser level, this is called as 301 permanent redirect.

This HTTP code informs Googlebot that the old URL has been permanently shifted to a new address.

It's also important to inform Google about this change explicitly through Google Search Console.

Faster Crawling and Re-indexing with XML Sitemaps

Jatra automatically generates XML sitemap (Read: Jatra 3.0 :: XML Sitemap Relocated + Smart URL Inclusions (Action Required) | Jatra Community) for each community and keeps it updated daily. Sitemaps are important indication to Google about all the new URLs it can crawl. We've seen that having a properly formatted Sitemap in Google Search Console will lead to faster re-crawl of the entire forum.

    There is NO Guarantee

This is the part no one likes to hear. There's no guarantee that your traffic will remain the same. We've seen the traffic go down for extended periods of time even after doing everything right. Some of the communities may take 4-6 months before gaining their SERPs back.

Google has no obligation to crawl, index and rank your community pages. However, if you are currently ranking; you'll most likely get your rankings back within a few weeks.

If anyone has questions about migrating their community out of Xenforo -> Jatra; we're happy to help.

We understand it. However it is difficult for us to convince our management about it.
