I’m a little lost. My company’s leadership and marketing team is so obsessed with vanity metrics that they want to pretend everything’s awesome.

Every month, I report:

  1. Total members: Yeah, spam bots included.

  2. Post Views: We had a DDoS attack and we didn’t remove the spam traffic from our reports

  3. Emoji reactions: bots attacked and added 20-40 likes on each post.

They see the numbers growing and think I’m doing a fantastic job. But who’s gonna tell them that this is not what community building is about. Should I look for new job?

I'm not against tracking vanity metrics. Give the investors and the founders what they want.

The vanity metrics are easier to track and while you won't get any actionable insight from them, they'll help you keep your job! :-)

We are indeed spending money to convert visitors into members. Spent money on X but the ROI is poor. Vanity metrics keeps your management happy.
