Does the order of URLs in an XML Sitemap Matter?
Yesterday, while talking to a potential customer of Jatra, we talked about Jatra's advanced SEO (and AEO) capabilities. . During the discussion, the client asked if the order of URLs in an XML sitemap matters to search engines?
The short answer: No, the order of URLs in an XML sitemap does not matter. XML sitemap is meant for search crawlers and are rarely read by humans.
Take a look at Jatra's own sitemap:
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">

Each entry is accompanied by <lastmod> attribute. Lastmod informs Google and search engine bots when was the URL last modified.
Best Practice:
There's no set rule for how the entries inside sitemap should be arranged; but if since sitemaps are system generated, you can ask to put the latest entries on the top. Although - it's NOT a requirement. It just helps when you want to debug the sitemaps manually.
