A community without content is a dead community. When starting a new community, the community managers have to create the content and initiate discussions. My question is - how often should a community manager post content?

In our community, I make a post daily. We are very early, but sometimes our members like it or just skip it. I do not get much engagement and it is very discouraging.

I’d like the members to engage and initiate discussions themselves. How should I go about it?

Rohit - as you mentioned, the content creation is the responsibility of the community manager in the early days of the community. We have an interesting ongoing discussion about what community managers do.

I agree that sometimes, it can be very discouraging that people do not relate with your content and engage with it. But you know what? It's a good way to test the content that works. I recommend following plan:

    1. Make a list of content that has worked i.e. people have shown interest in by liking it or commenting on it.
    2. Call a monthly meeting with all the members. Not all will show up; but those who do, will give you very important feedback.
    3. Casually discuss about the community content, their expectations and things you could do that'd help your members.

Keep in mind that your community is all about your members. Find out what they want and create it. It's good that you'll have a better clarity about your community needs so that in future, you can build on it.

I think you are on the right path. Just keep going.

Thank you. As you had suggested, I am working on painkiller content for our members. I'm looking at the most frequently asked questions, FAQs from competitor website and some keyword research. The progress is good.

I like the suggestion that I should have monthly calls with the members. I'd rather let our members drive the content than me posting all day.

To answer your question: A community manager should post about 1-2 discussion threads daily. As your community starts generating user-generated content, you can increase or decrease the frequency based on how your community responds.

When I was actively managing CrazyEngineers, I posted about 3-4 new discussions daily. So any new visitors would find lot of interesting content to engage with. I think the same strategy can be useful to you as well.
