• I am new community building. I work for a startup that is building a developer tool. I have been given a task to build a Discord community of developers who are using our tool.

So far, I have tried sharing about our community on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. We got about 20 members, but there’s no activity.

I have tried messaging them, but no one responded. All I have so far is a bunch of likes on the posts I have shared but no active discussions. Please let me know if there is a way to get active users for our Discord community? Thank you in advance.

Discord may not be an ideal platform for technical community. Do your users prefer real-time chat or want deep, insightful discussions?

I would start by having a direct conversation with few of the users who have signed up. Connect with them through email or LinkedIn. Try to talk to them and understand how your community can serve them better.

I was a part of team that built a technical community for an enterprise. We realised that our users preferred code sharing and reviews over casual discussions. We had to build a few custom features on the top of our community platform to support them.

I think 20 members is a small number. Leverage social media to get more attention and create some useful content for your members that they want to immediately engage with. Keep us posted about your progress.

I agree with Angela. It's often difficult to grow a community on Discord because it totally misses out on the organic growth aspect and relies heavily on member invitations. It's the reason we are building Jatra as an alternative to Discord.

I recommend hosting weekly virtual events with your target users. For example, you could host a webinar or a virtual meetup for your target members on Discord. Webinars are a great way to get members for your Discord community.

Another way is to put a link to the community at a prominent place on your landing page, preferably the top navigation menu. Links placed in the footer won't get the attention your community requires.

The only way to get users for your Discord community is to place the link to your community in the hero section of your landing page.

We used this approach to gain our first 500 users. However, we could never build any traction on it. Ultimately, we ditched it in favour of a custom forum software that we developed in house.
